ECO CHALLENGE
Submitted by: District 5580 Environment Committee

February EcoChallenge: Make the Planet Your Valentine!

As concern for the environment reaches an all-time high, especially after last years scorching heat, here are six ways you can show some love to the planet this month:

1. Consider a meat-free dinner (or no beef at least), featuring local food, for that special meal with your loved one.

2. Consider the packaging on flowers and other gifts you might be sharing and do your best to avoid plastics and non-recyclable materials.

3. Switch off all your lights and other energy consuming devices and enjoy a candlelight dinner and evening with your family instead! Use the distraction-free environment to enjoy each other with conversation and other fun games. Turn down the heat and snuggle together under a blanket while you’re at it.

4. Plan out how you can re-wild your own outdoor spaces when spring arrives. Build a bird feeder or a bug hotel for helpful garden creatures.

5. Buy only palm oil-free treats this Valentines Day or those that use certified sustainable palm oil. Palm oil is used in 50% of packaged supermarket products but it has a very negative environmental impact when not produced sustainably.

6. Declare your love for the planet by writing your local politicians and news media, sharing your passion for the environment, and asking for help to protect it! Source: 6 ways to show your love for the planet this Valentine’s Day (countryliving.com)

Please submit a summary of your club events, news and projects to Renae Ronquist and Gloria Mink by the 10th of each month. We can include information in our Monday Minutes and in our newsletter.
